Question: Find the single equation represented by the following pair of straight lines: $2x +y = 0$ and $x +y = 0$

Solution:
Given,

Equation of line i is 2x + y = 0

Equation of line ii is x + y = 0

Now,

Multiplying the equations (i) and (ii), we get,

(2x +y)(x +y) = 0

or, 2x (x +y) + y(x +y) = 0

or, 2x² + 2xy + xy + y² = 0

Hence, 2x² + 3xy + y² = 0 is the required single equation represented by the above lines.
