Given,

1st expression: a² -b² -2a +1

= (a² -2a +1²) -b²

= (a-1)² - (b)²

= (a -b -1)(a +b -1)

2nd expression: a² -ab -a

= a (a -b -1)

Now,

Highest Common Factor (H.C.F.) = common factors only

= (a -b -1)
