What can be the possible reasons for the production of large number of citrus fruits in the Mediterranean Climatic Region?

Answer: Mediterranean Climatic Region is also known as the "Garden of the World" due to the production of varieties of citrus fruits (lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc.), vegetables, and other fruits. It produces 70% of the world's total export of citrus fruits. It is found in the areas nearer to the Mediterranean Sea and extend in a latitude of 30°-45° in the Northern Hemisphere and 30°-40° in the Southern Hemisphere. Following are the possible reasons for the production of large number of citrus fruits in this region:
  1. Availability of sea water.
  2. It has long summer and moderate climate which is favourable for such fruits to grow.
  3. Summers are hot-dry and winters are cold-wet which maintains the appropriate temperature for the fruits to grow. Low temperature is often regarded worse for the citrus fruits.
  4. Large agricultural land as the forests have been cut down for growing crops, trees, and fruits.
Other reasons may include advancement in agricultural techniques. People of this region are modern and advanced which contributes to its large production. In fact, 65% of the world's total export of wine is from this region.
