Computer Network is a group of computer interconnected to each other for communication and sharing of resources. In this chapter, we will discuss definition of computer network, its advantages, and disadvantages.

Summary

  • Computer network is just a group of computers that are connected together.
  • Inexpensive system, sharing of resources, strong security mechanism, and higher storage capacity are few advantages of computer network.
  • Expensive set-up, risks of hackers and crackers, dependency upon server, and requirement of trained individuals are some drawbacks of computer network.

What is a Computer Network?

Communication between two computing devices is possible only when they are interconnected to each other. Such connection made, either logically or physically, between to or more computers to facilitate data communication and sharing of other resources is known as computer network.

Definition: The connection made between two or more computing devices using computer hardware and software for data transmission, sharing of resources and overall communication is known as computer network.

A Bluetooth connection established between two devices is an example of computer network. Similarly, internet is also an example of computer network.

Advantages of Computer Network

Sharing of data, information, resources has always been a human need. In fact, communication is an integral part of human life. To fulfill these needs using computer means, computer network are established in various workplaces and other areas also.

Following are some advantages of Computer Network:

  1. It makes sharing of resources, data, and information possible between various computers.
  2. It is inexpensive to maintain a computer network.
  3. It allows to strengthen the security system by using id and password for authentication.
  4. It provides a relatively larger central storage device having higher storage capacity which can be commonly accessed by authorized users.

Disadvantages of Computer Network

Computer network is advantageous. At the same time, it can be dangerous if a person uses it without adopting few security measures. Your data can be easily accessed by an unwanted user by penetrating through your weak point in the computer network. Thus, the users should only use a safe, secure, and reliable computer network.

Here are few disadvantages of computer network:

  1. It is very expensive to set-up a computer network.
  2. It has risks of data loss as hackers and crackers can have access to the network.
  3. The clients in a network have to depend upon the server for accessing anything and everything in the network.
  4. Skilled and trained IT personnel are required to operate and use a computer network.
