H.C.F. | SciPiPupil

Find the HCF: $a^2-2a$ and $a^4-8a$.

This is a class 10 Question From H.C.F. chapter of Unit Algebra (Mathematics). All the steps for the solutions are mentioned in the description below. If that's hard for you to navigate, you can always visit the facebook link given at the end of every posts.

Solution:
Given,

$1^{st}\; expression\;=\;a^2-2a$
= $a(a-2)$

$2^{nd}\; expression\;=\;a^4-8a$
= $a(a^3-8)$
= $a(a^3-2^3)$
= $a(a-2)(a^2+2a+4)$

Therefore, The H.C.F. = a(a-2)

Explanation to the above answer.

Step 1: Write the first expression given in the question.

Step 2: Here, we are finding H.C.F. using factorisation. So, find the factors of the first expression. Once, factors can no longer be found, leave the expression as it is.

Step 3: Write the second expression given in the question.

Step 4: Find the common factors of the expression.

Step 5: To make it easy to factorize, we write the terms with the degree 3.

Step 6: If factors can be further generated, find more factors. Here, we used the formula (a³-b³) = (a-b)(a²+ab+b²).

Step 7: Write the H.C.F. (Highest Common Factor) of the given expressions by analysing the factors you generated in each expressions. Here, a and (a-2) are the common factors.
